AL Central Team Urged to Sign Former Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Pitcher
Former Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Noah Syndergaard has yet to find a home for the 2024 season. The right-hander has been in the big leagues for eight years, but after a disappointing 2023 campaign, Syndergaard doesn't have a team.
The right-hander pitched in 10 games for the Phillies during the 2022 season, posting a 4.12 ERA in 54 2/3 innings pitched.
Syndergaard wasn't great in Philadelphia, but he was good enough to get another opportunity with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023 before he was traded to the Cleveland Guardians in the summer prior to eventually getting released.
The 31-year-old spent most of his career with the New York Mets where was regarded as one of the better pitchers in baseball, earning an All-Star appearance in 2016.
While he isn't the same pitcher as he was back then, Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report believes he's a free agent who should be signed as soon as possible. The team Rymer lists for Syndergaard is the Minnesota Twins.
The Twins starting rotation has been below average to start the season, and while Syndergaard might not fix all of their issues, he'd give them a veteran option who understands what it takes to compete at the big league level.
His stretch with the Guardians wasn't great, allowing 20 earned runs in 33 1/3 innings pitched, good for a 5.40 ERA. His 7.34 FIP also didn't leave much to be desired.
Syndergaard has dealt with injuries throughout his career and that was clear in recent seasons as his velocity was down. In January, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Syndergaard was throwing in the mid-90s, which is a promising sign if true.
His time with the Phillies was short lived, but Syndergaard should find a home eventually.
