Contract Extension Talks Reportedly Break Down Between Nola, Philadelphia Phillies
Talks have broken down between the Philadelphia Phillies and right-hander Aaron Nola regarding a contract extension beyond this season, according to multiple reports.
“We think the world of him, quality pitcher, quality human being, but sometimes you get to this point where you're not able to consummate a deal that both sides feel comfortable,” Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters.
Negotiations could continue following the end of the season.
"We had good communication with the Phillies, “Nola’s agent Joe Longo said in a statement. “We just couldn’t agree at this time. We’ll pick up the conversation again at the end of the season."
“We're very open minded to trying to sign him at the end of the season,” Dombrowski added. “We're hopeful he'll remain a Phillie for a long time."
Nola will be the Phillies’ Opening Day starter when he faces off against Jacob deGrom and the host Texas Rangers on Thursday.
Nola is signed for $16 million this season.
Nola went 11-13 with a 3.25 ERA in the regular season and a 2-2 with a 4.91 ERA in five postseason games. It was his first time competing in the playoffs.
Nola finished fourth in National League Cy Young voting. He came in third in 2018 and seventh in ’20.
