Mets Continue Fire Sale, Philadelphia Phillies Interested in Duo of Stars
The Philadelphia Phillies continue to hone in on outfield players they want to add before the trade deadline.
MLB Insider Jon Morosi reported that the Phillies are among multiple teams who could be interested in veteran outfielders from the New York Mets.
With a full fire sale taking place for the Mets, they'll look to move on from Mark Canha and Tommy Pham to get prospects back in return. New York has already traded away their closer David Robertson and their ace Max Scherzer as they seemingly have waved the white flag on the season.
Philadelphia, on the other hand, is firmly locked into a playoff race.
After dropping two out of three to the Pittsburgh Pirates over the weekend, the Phillies find themselves a half-game out of the final Wild Card spot.
Canha and Pham would upgrade the outfield's defense and provide much needed depth.
Both are also hitting the ball fairly well this season.
Canha is batting .245/.343/.381 with six home runs and 29 RBI, while Pham is hitting .268/.348/.472 with 10 home runs and 36 RBI.
Either player would give the bottom of the lineup an upgrade at the plate and their defensive ability gives manager Rob Thomson more flexibility on where he wants to put his players.
With the trade deadline a couple days away, Philadelphia has not been active for a team that wants to buy.
Trading for Canha and Pham would be a welcome addition to address the biggest weakness on the roster.
Whether the Phillies are interested in acquiring both of the outfielders is to be seen.
