MLB Insider Says Phillies Interested in Signing Twins' Ace
Offseason rumors around the MLB are starting to heat up after the GM meetings took place earlier this the week.
The Philadelphia Phillies seem to be major players in the free agency market as they'll target starting pitching and are seen as a potential destination for Shohei Ohtani.
While it would be great to add the best player in baseball to this roster, Dave Dombrowski has made it known that starting pitching will be their focus.
Aaron Nola rumors and connections continue to swirl with some people thinking he'll be back with the Phillies and others having him departing to another team for the first time in his career.
If that happens, MLB insider Jon Morosi reports that they will pivot to adding the ace of the Minnesota Twins.
"The Phillies are interested in Sonny Gray, sources say, and will be a top suitor for him if they do not retain free agent Aaron Nola," he posted on social media.
Gray hit free agency following the 2023 season and is one of the top arms available on the market.
He's coming off one of his best years where he recorded an ERA of 2.79 across 32 starts and 184 innings pitched.
Beyond that, the star right-hander also has a current connection to Philadelphia from his time with the Cincinnati Reds.
"Gray and Philly pitching coach Caleb Cotham are former college teammates and worked well together while Cotham was with the Reds," Morosi noted.
That relationship could certainly help tilt Gray towards the Phillies in free agency as they look to add a top-level starter.
