Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh took his first steps on Saturday toward a return to the lineup, per MLB.com.

Marsh took swings on Saturday in the indoor batting cages at Citizens Bank Park, a session that was supposed to take place outdoors before weather intervened. He did participate in some defensive drills, along with doing some cardio in the pool.

It’s significant progress for Marsh, who bruised his left knee after he crashed into a wall chasing a fly ball on Aug. 5. X-rays and an MRI didn’t reveal any long-term damage.

The Phillies hope to have Marsh back by the end of the month. At the time of the injury, manager Rob Thomson said it was likely Marsh would miss “two to three weeks.” With Saturday’s activity, he’s already a week into that recovery time.

Before the injury Marsh was in the midst of his most productive offense season, as he slashed .281/.367/.460/.827 with eight home runs and 43 RBI in 101 games. He’s three home runs and nine RBI away from tying his career high.

Marsh broke in with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 and was dealt to the Phillies at last year’s trade deadline for catching prospect Logan O’Hoppe. Marsh helped the Phillies reach the World Series.

Another Phillies outfielder, Cristian Pache, is on the verge of being ready to return as he’s in the middle of an injury rehab assignment that has led him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
