Philadelphia Phillies Could Be Showing Trade Interest in Tigers Ace
The market is starting to heat up ahead of the August 1st MLB Trade Deadline.
With the Philadelphia Phillies back in a Wild Card spot, they are expected to be buyers.
Outfielders are the main upgrade that the front office is looking to buy, but Mark Feinsand of MLB.com wrote that they have interest in acquiring the Detroit Tigers starting ace.
Eduardo Rodriguez is having the best year of his career after leaving the Boston Red Sox for the Tigers in 2021.
The lefthander has a 6-5 record with a career low 2.95 ERA in 15 games started. He also is holding opposing batters to a career low .216 average compared to his career numbers of .249.
Rodriguez signed a five-year deal with Detroit that gave him an opt-out option after the second season. It's expected that the lefty will use this strong year to hit the market and command more money on his next deal.
With a 46-55 record, the Tigers are expected to sell what they can at the deadline. Pitching is the best asset on their roster they will try to get a return on.
Because of this, it should cost the Phillies a ton to get Rodriguez. An outfield prospect or two might be able to land a piece that significantly helps their postseason chances.
Philadelphia only has three starting pitchers who have started more than 20 games this season. As a starting rotation, the Phillies rank 12th in the MLB with a 4.14 ERA.
Rodriguez would be a huge help for this team.
He'd be another high end starting pitcher in the rotation that has two aces when Zach Wheeler and Aaron Nola have their best stuff.
