Philadelphia Phillies Prospect Song Throws Off Mound For Second Time At Spring Training

Noah Song, the pitcher selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in this year's Rule 5 draft from the Boston Red Sox, has thrown off a mound for the second time this spring.

They may be small steps, but Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Noah Song has come a long way since arriving at spring training in Clearwater, Fla.

The 25-year old right-hander threw 25 pitches on Tuesday during his second mound session since reporting to camp on Thursday.

Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski and manager Rob Thomson watched closely.

“It’s a work in progress, for sure,” Song said. “It’s far from perfect, and I’m just hoping for an upward trajectory. Just trying to continue to get some improvement every day.”

Song was selected in the Major League phase of the 2023 Rule 5 Draft.

Song attended the Naval Academy, but was drafted in the fourth round of the 2019 MLB draft by the Boston Red Sox. He pitched seven games with the Red Sox Low-A club, but was placed on the Restricted List as he went off to fulfil his military service time with the Navy.

Song was not discharged from the Navy. He was transferred from active duty to selective reserves and is still serving while being permitted to play professional baseball. Typically, reservists serve one weekend a month and two weeks a year to fulfill their service obligation.

Song may be a longshot, but this was another crucial small step taken.

“I feel like I’m trying to be a baseball player again, I guess,” Song said. “It’s hard when you’re around the competition level these guys are. I’m just trying to keep my head above water right now.”
