Philadelphia Phillies Wednesday Notes: Marsh, Strahm, and Suárez
There's quite a bit of news coming out of the Philadelphia Phillies camp today.
First up on the docket is center fielder Brandon Marsh.
According to manager Rob Thomson, Marsh has been dealing with a broken blood vessel in his middle finger on the left hand. However, it is nothing serious and he is expected to play Thursday against the Detroit Tigers.
Perhaps the most concerning piece of news from Thomson today was in regards to Ranger Suárez's health. Suárez returned early from the World Baseball Classic after pitching for Venezuela with elbow inflammation.
After an MRI on Tuesday showed no structural damage, the Phillies will be cautious with their pitcher. He will likely not be ready for the first week of the season, but Thomson noted they don't believe it's anything too serious.
That leaves the door wide open for Matt Strahm to become a 'bulk-innings' type of guy for Philadelphia while Suárez recovers. He will be a key cog in eating up some innings in the interim.
Strahm holds a career 3.81 ERA over the course of 304.2 innings pitched. He has performed well this spring in 7.1 innings pitched in which he has allowed just one earned run that came from a solo home run.
While not great news, none of it is concerning in the long term and Philadelphia has a depth plan in place to provide coverage for Suárez's innings.
