Phillies Among Teams Predicted to Land Two of Top Remaining Free Agents
The Philadelphia Phillies have been relatively quiet in MLB free agency this winter other than the splash they made in re-signing starting pitcher Aaron Nola.
Nola's seven-year, $172 million was one of the best this offseason but it didn't move the needle for the Phillies in terms of improvement from last year's roster.
Philadelphia did try to pursue Yoshinobu Yamamoto, however he ended up with the Los Angeles Dodgers an joined Shohei Ohtani.
President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski isn't known for being frugal but he is known to make the right roster decisions. For months reports were saying that the Phillies were not interested in Blake Snell or Jordan Montgomery.
Both have now been sitting on the market for months and perhaps their price tag has come down, especially if it means playing for a contender who has made a deep playoff run in successive seasons. Someone like the Phillies perhaps?
According to a new MLB.com article, Philadelphia is listed among the top teams predicted to land one or both of the starters mentioned above.
The Phillies have a two-headed dragon of Nola and Zack Wheeler leading the charge at the top of the rotation. That being said, it has felt like the rotation could use a boost considering the performance over the last two seasons and the constant need to use a sixth starter.
Adding a caliber starter like Snell or Montgomery would immediately solidify Philadelphia's as one of the best not just in the division, but in the entire MLB.
If the Phillies truly want to get over the hump and earn another World Series ring, then signing one of the top two remaining starters on the market is a great starting point.
