Rangers Want Home Games 'Obnoxiously Loud' Like Philadelphia
The Philadelphia Phillies are getting a lot of attention for their game atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park. Between the noise and the way the players interact with the fans, it’s not surprising that the Phillies are undefeated at home so far this postseason.
Baseball fans around the country have noticed. So have baseball players, including the Texas Rangers, who are preparing for Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.
Yes, the Rangers are up 2-0 on the Houston Astros and get to host them in Game 3 on Wednesday night.
The Rangers have played just one home game so far this postseason — Game 3 of the American League Division Series. That was the card they were dealt after being the No. 5 seed and sweeping both the Tampa Bay Rays and the Baltimore Orioles.
But they have an eye on the Phillies, and they’re not scouting a potential World Series opponent. They, like other baseball fans, are watching Philly go crazy for their team, and the Rangers want that kind of atmosphere at Globe Life Field as long as the postseason party continues.
"I think the game we saw in Philly [Monday night], I want something like that where it’s deafening almost from the start to the end," Rangers reliever Josh Sborz said. "Just obnoxiously loud."
Sborz is from the East Coast, as he grew up in McLean, Va.
First baseman Nathaniel Lowe grew up in Georgia, in the shadow of those Atlanta Braves dynasties, so he knows fan support.
The Philadelphia Inquirer estimated the fan noise at Citizens Bank Park for Game 4 of the NLDS at 112 decibels.
Lowe wants it that loud in Texas, too.
"They’ve got a good thing going on up there," he said. "The home team support in Philly looks really cool but it’s time to let our fans have their shot."
