Hoskins And Phillies Appear Far Away From A Contract Extension
Rhys Hoskins, one of the more polarizing as well as captivating players in franchise history, will be a free agent after the 2023 season.
As of now, it doesn’t appear that there has been much traction with a contract extension for the Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman.
“In Rhys’ case, we have free agents just like we had last year with (Jean) Segura,” president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski told reporters in Clearwater, Fla. “He was in that position. Rhys is a tremendous player, a tremendous person. He’s done a lot for the organization. And so we’ll just analyze it and see what takes places, but we love him. We think the world of him.”
It’s natural to wonder if the Phillies should extend Hoskins for multiple years and in excess of $100 million.
Hoskins hit .246 with 30 home runs and 79 RBI in the regular season. He added six homers and 12 RBI in 17 postseason games.
On the flip side, there were 12 errors in the regular season and some costly miscues and mental mistakes in the playoffs.
Hoskins is a talented player. That’s not in question.
Dombrowski has to determine whether Hoskins is the long-term answer at first base. There’s no easy answer here.
We’ll just have to wait, watch and see how the situation plays out.
