Do Red Sox Expect to Sign Texas Rangers Free Agent Jordan Montgomery?

The Boston Red Sox want to add another starter before Opening Day and Texas Rangers free agent Jordan Montgomery appears to top their wish list.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora isn’t predicting that his club will sign Texas Rangers free agent Jordan Montgomery, but it sure sounds possible.

Cora participated in a Zoom call with Montgomery before the start of free agency, and the Red Sox are in the market for another starter. The Boston skipper was asked if another starter would be added before Opening Day.

“I think we’re working. We’re working hard towards that. If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen,” Cora said, according to MLB.com. “But we’ve been working hard the whole offseason. It’s not a lack of trying. There have been a lot of meetings, a lot of conversations.”

Reports Monday suggested the Red Sox were indeed closing on a deal with Montgomery, who is a Scott Boras client. The Rangers, despite an obvious need in the rotation, don’t appear to be in the running to bring back one of their postseason heroes.

Texas doesn’t win its first World Series without the contributions of the veteran left-hander down the stretch and throughout the playoffs. The Rangers are also without starters Max Scherzer, Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle until the second half of the season as all three are rehabbing.

Montgomery and Blake Snell are considered the best free-agent starters still available. The Red Sox have been mentioned as a Montgomery suitor throughout the offseason.

“We’re still engaged with position players, with pitchers,” Cora added. “We’re trying to improve. If there’s an opportunity to do that, I bet we’ll jump on it.”
