Corey Seager Says Texas Rangers Rookie Josh Jung 'Snubbed' for Gold Glove
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers saw five of their players named finalists for the 2023 Gold Glove award.
One of them was not third baseman Josh Jung, and shortstop Corey Seager said the rookie has a right to feel snubbed.
“For me, personally, I feel like he’s a little snubbed,” Seager said Wednesday. “I’m sure he isn’t going to come out and say that, but he should feel that way. What he’s done out there, the guy’s a vacuum. Anything that’s hit to him, he catches. For my opinion, that’s a Gold Glove finalist. Just how well he can play and the ability to catch the baseball is off the charts.”
Seager, Jung and the Rangers lead the American League Championship Series 2-1 over the Houston Astros going into Game 4 on Thursday night at Globe Life Field.
The finalists for the American League Gold Glove at third base are Toronto’s Matt Chapman, Cleveland’s Jose Ramirez and Houston’s Alex Bregman.
The Rangers’ finalists are catcher Jonah Heim, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, second baseman Marcus Semien, Seager and outfielder Adolis García.
Jung played 121 games at third base this season and finished with a .988 fielding percentage, with 313 assists and just six errors.
His fielding percentage is the best among all third basemen that qualify. None of the three AL finalists are in the top five in fielding percentage at the position.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy gave a heap of praise on Jung’s defense all season.
“I’m proud of these guys, these five finalists, and a couple that I think were left out to be honest, Josh and (Leody) Taveras,” Bochy said. “I’m proud of how these guys have separated their offense from their defense and they’ve just done a great job out there all year.”
