Glenn Otto Appointment Monday With Texas Rangers Doctor
Texas Rangers pitcher Glenn Otto will be re-examined by team doctors on Monday to determine his readiness for the regular season.
Rangers general manager Chris Young relayed the news before the Rangers’ final spring training game against the San Diego Padres.
Otto will be re-examined by Dr. Keith Meister, the team’s surgeon who most recently performed UCL surgery on San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. He also handled the Tommy John surgery for Rangers prospect Avery Weems last month.
Otto was scratched from a start more than a week ago with what the Rangers described as right lat tightness. He was supposed to undergo an MRI, but those results were not disclosed by the team this week.
Young said once the examination was complete, the Rangers would be able to determine when Otto could return. But Young indicated it could be a long wait. He didn’t commit to putting Otto on the 60-day injured list to start the season, but indicated it was a possibility.
Otto’s last start was against the Seattle Mariners on March 12, going 1 2/3 innings, giving up four hits (including a home run) and six earned runs. He walked four and struck out two. It was, by far, his worst outing of the spring.
But he made no mention of any physical issues after the start.
For the spring, Otto is 0-1 with an 11.88 ERA in 8 1/3 innings with 11 strikeouts and nine walks.
Otto pitched his first full season for the Rangers in 2022, going 7-10 with a 4.64 ERA. Otto ended up winning as many games as Jon Gray, the Rangers’ top free-agent pitching acquisition last offseason.
