Jordan Montgomery Agent Scott Boras Enjoying Game Of Chicken With MLB Teams

Superagent Scott Boras, whose clients include Jordan Montgomery and Blake Snell, addressed the question everyone is asking: Why haven't they signed?

Jordan Montgomery is still available.

And his agent, Scott Boras, says potential suitors are starting to panic.

During San Fransisco Giants third baseman Matt Chapman's free agent signing press conference on Monday, Boras addressed his remaining unsigned clients, including Montgomery and Blake Snell. Chapman's three-year deal is worth $54 million and includes opt-outs after each of the first two years of the deal. It's similar to another Boras client, Cody Bellinger, who recently signed with the Chicago Cubs.

Montgomery, who helped the Texas Rangers win their first World Series championship in 2023, has been one of the most coveted free agents over the winter. But we're now deep into March, and Opening Day is less than three weeks away.

"There is a pitching panic going on in baseball," Boras said on Monday. "We've got so many starting pitchers who are now compromised — maybe short-term, some long-term. And the calls for elite starters are starting to increase. With many clubs right now, because of the pitching issue, the competitiveness of their seasons is at risk."

Boras suggested that four new teams have expressed interest in Montgomery and Snell in the past week, but whether that's agent posturing or legit, is not clear.

The Rangers, of course, would love to re-sign Montgomery, especially with three starters not available until the summer because of injury recoveries: Max Scherzer, Tyler Mahle, and Jacob deGrom. They're expected to return in June, July, and late July/early August in the case of deGrom.

"Ownership reaches for so many different avenues until there are no avenues to reach," Boras said. "That takes time. They delve into it. They go into all different forms to avoid the obvious. Why wasn't this done in November? Why weren't No. 1 pitchers signed?"
