Watch Texas Rangers' Max Scherzer Strike Out Side In Most Unusual Way

Texas Rangers ace Max Scherzer struck out the side in the top of the first Monday in a very uncommon fashion.

ARLINGTON, Texas – Max Scherzer struck out the side in the top of the first Monday night at Globe Life Field.

That's not so uncommon for the three-time Cy Young award winner. But the way he did it was pretty unusual.

The Texas Rangers ace struck out the first two Los Angeles Angels batters Mickey Moniak and Shohei Ohtani in a relatively normal fashion. He got Moniak swinging a 94.3 mph fastball up and away in the strike zone. Scherzer got Ohtani swinging on an 88.7 mph cut fastball down and in.

That brought Brandon Drury to the plate. Drury took Strike 1 and then Ball 1 before taking Strike 2. Drury then stepped out of the box to gather himself. After stepping back into the box moments later, home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt called him for batter pitch time violation, an automatic strike call. That meant Strike 3 called looking without Scherzer having to throw a pitch.
