Why Globe Life Field Roof Will Be Closed For Texas Rangers' ALDS Game 3
ARLINGTON, Texas – The roof will be closed at Globe Life Field as the Texas Rangers host the Baltimore Orioles in Game 3 of the American League Division Series on Tuesday night.
Major League Baseball made the decision about whether the roof would be open or closed for the game, which is league policy for the postseason.
John Blake, executive vice president of public affairs for the Texas Rangers, tweeted that the decision was made based on “criteria used during the regular season.”
On Monday, Rangers executive vice president and general manager Chris Young outlined some of the factors, but that there is one overriding factor that goes into the decision.
“It’s an MLB decision,” Young said. “Our stadium operations group will be in touch with league officials. Weather will dictate most of it.”
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy did not appear to have a preference when asked about it Tuesday afternoon and wasn't sure if it would have an impact on offense or not.
"Not enough data for me to say," Bochy said.
League rules outline that MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, or a designee, makes all decisions on roof movements. MLB can consult the home club and the crew chief for the umpires that will call the game.
When Globe Life Field hosted the 2020 postseason as a neutral site affair, 13 of the 16 games were played with the roof open. Tuesday is the Rangers’ first home playoff game since the new park opened in 2020.
One of the factors considered is the surface of the concourse and other concrete walking surfaces in the ballpark. These surfaces can become slick in high humidity, so keeping the roof closed prevents those issues.
