Top Prospect is Valuable Trade Piece for Texas Rangers
The depth of the Texas Rangers farm system isn’t solely about producing talent for the big league club. It can also be to acquire talent.
Yes, additions of Josh Jung, Evan Carter and Leody Taveras, to name a few, were huge on the run to the first World Series title in franchise history. The Rangers don’t lift the Commissioner’s Trophy without their contributions.
And the impending arrival, perhaps as soon as the 2024 season, of prospect Wyatt Langford is definitely exciting. This year’s first-round pick is already blazing a trail through the minor leagues.
But other highly-regarded talents could see their path to the majors blocked, such as infielder Justin Foscue. The Rangers are set with All-Stars at second base, shortstop and third.
Foscue’s best shot could be elsewhere. That reality could help fetch the Rangers more pitching, for example.
MLB.com published a list of one potential trade candidate from each team. Foscue, for the reasons below, was the choice for Texas.
Foscue had a solid season in Triple-A, slashing .266/.394/.468 with 18 home runs, 84 RBIs and 14 stolen bases in 122 games, but the infielder has no path whatsoever to the Majors with Marcus Semien, Corey Seager and Josh Jung locked into their respective positions. The 24-year-old, who ranks as the Rangers’ No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, could be used in a deal to bolster another area of need on Texas’ roster.
Rangers broadcaster Jared Sandler recently mentioned the trade market as a possible avenue, as well as free agency, to add another starter. Corbin Burnes, Dylan Cease and Tyler Glasnow were brought up as trade possibilities.
Foscue could be one the pieces to make that happen.
