Texas Rangers Activate All-Star Corey Seager Wednesday
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers activated shortstop Corey Seager on Wednesday to start against the Chicago White Sox, according to manager Bruce Bochy.
Seager had been on the injured list since July 22 with a right thumb sprain suffered while sliding into second base against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He wasn’t in the original starting lineup for Wednesday’s game. Josh Smith was supposed to start at shortstop. But after Seager faced live pitching in a batting practice session — what Bochy called his “last test” before activation — the Rangers went ahead started the All-Star.
To make room, the Rangers put infielder Brad Miller on the injured list with hamstring tightness.
“The batting practice was his last test, so we checked that box off against live pitching,” Bochy said. “He’s been running the bases. So we’ve covered that. We’re confident he’s good to go.”
Seager has been hitting off a tee and taking light batting practice since the team returned home Monday. He worked on fielding and other baseball activities during the road trip last seek.
With Seager back, the Rangers get back one of their best offensive weapons. Despite missing the final week and a half of July, Seager batted .365 with seven doubles, five home runs, 10 RBI, a .414 on-base percentage and a .714 slugging percentage. In July his average and slugging ranked third in the American League.
For the season, Seager is slashing .350/.413/.631/1.044 with 15 home runs and 58 RBI.
