Texas Rangers All-Star Corey Seager Gets X-Ray After Hit by Pitch
Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager left Tuesday night’s loss at the Los Angeles Angels early after being hit by a pitch, but the initial prognosis is encouraging.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy called it a forearm contusion.
“We did have an X-ray – negative, so that’s good news there,” Bochy said after the 9-3 setback. “So it’s a contusion. We’ll see how he’s doing [Wednesday].”
The All-Star was drilled by a 92-mph fastball from Angels starter Reid Detmers in the fifth inning.
With the game being a blowout, Bochy was able to get several regulars a few extra innings of rest. In addition to Seager, Marcus Semien, Adolis García and Jonah Heim came out early.
The Rangers are halfway through a finishing stretch of 10 games in 10 days.
“You look at that,” Bochy said. “A few guys get some at-bats, get some guys off their legs. We’re in a pretty good stretch here. Got Jonah from behind the plate. Of course Corey was gonna come out, Marcus and Doli.”
Seager didn’t want to come out, but understands the situation.
“Where we’re at, it was like, ‘What’s the point in pushing it tonight?’” Seager said, according to MLB.com. “It’s just that kind of thing. Hopefully, you get off your feet and feel a little better [Wednesday]. ... I would like to be out there.”
The Rangers could ill afford to lose Seager, who is leading the American League in batting average (.332) to go along with 33 home runs and 96 RBI despite being on the injured list twice this season.
The series has already proved irritating on the injury front, as starting pitcher Jon Gray left Monday’s win early with wrist soreness. The Rangers are still awaiting the results of an imaging exam done Tuesday.
Texas (88-69) continues the lead the AL West by 2.5 games over the Houston Astros (86-72). The Seattle Mariners (85-72) are 3.0 games back. The Rangers and Angels play the rubber game of their three-game series Wednesday night, as do the Astros and Mariners.
