Hometown Hero! 'Evan Carter Day' Celebrated Texas Rangers Rookie With Parade, Tree Lighting
The World Series celebrations are still going for Texas Rangers rookie Evan Carter.
The outfielder who helped the Rangers win their first World Series championship three weeks ago, was given a hero's welcome during a parade and Christmas tree lighting ceremony in his hometown of Elizabethton, Tenn., on Saturday.
"Evan Carter Day" in Elizabethton included a parade through downtown with Carter and his wife Kaylen and their dog riding in the back of a pickup truck behind the Elizabethton High School marching band. The city issued a proclamation before the official annual tree lighting, naming Nov. 18 "Evan Carter Day." The "Parade of Champions" celebrated Carter's World Series and the two-time state champion Elizabethton marching band.
"This is awesome, the amount of support everybody's shown," Carter told WCYB. "It's been great how many people have reached out. It's been a real blessing. It's a great hometown and somewhere that I'm proud to be from."
Carter, who turned 21 in August, was called up from Triple-A Round Rock on Sept. 8 and helped the Rangers earn a Wild Card spot in the postseason. Carter hit .306 with five homers, 12 RBI, and 15 runs scored in 23 regular-season games. He hit .300 with a homer, nine doubles, and nine runs scored in 17 postseason games.
Elizabethton is a town of about 14,500 in the far northeast corner of Tennessee.
Carter grew up in the town and played baseball and football at Elizabethton. His football coach was Shawn Witten, the brother of fellow Elizabethton alum and former Dallas Cowboy tight end Jason Witten.
