Lost Weekend: Texas Rangers Swept By Brewers, Lose Fourth Straight
ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers with a 6-2 win Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Field.
The Rangers (72-52) lost their fourth consecutive game, matching their season-worst stretch of the season, and went 2-6 on their homestand.
Texas opens a two-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks at 8:40 p.m. Monday.
The Rangers remain 2 1/2 games ahead of the Houston Astros in the AL West. The Seattle Mariners swept the Astros in Houston and have pulled to within three games of Texas and a half-game behind Houston.
Max Scherzer allowed three runs on three hits, four walks, and a hit batter in 3 2/3 innings in his first rough start for the Rangers.
He threw 40 pitches in the third in which runs scored on a bases-loaded walk and bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. Consecutive two-out doubles by Tyrone Taylor and Christian Yelich scored another run in the fourth and ended Scherzer's day after 99 pitches. It's the first time in four starts for Texas that Scherzer failed to go at least six innings.
The NL Central-leading Brewers (68-57) added three runs in the eighth to put an emphatic end to their sweep. Taylor's triple to right field scored two and he scored on Carlos Santana's single to center.
Brewers 6, Rangers 2
Here are the top moments from the Rangers-Brewers on Sunday:
Off Day For Defense
The Rangers lead the AL in fielding percentage but Sunday put a slight dent into that lead. Third baseman Ezequiel Duran committed three errors -- two fielding and one throwing. Duran has five of the Rangers' nine errors since the All-Star break, which are still tied for the fewest with Toronto.
Sunday's three-error game is just the third Rangers' multi-error game in the past 100 games since April 27. It's the Rangers' second game with more than two errors in 2023. The only other was five errors against the Cubs on April 8.
Texas' club record for fielding pct. (.986) and fewest errors (83) were set in 2021.
Bullpen Duty
With Max Scherzer's short outing, the bullpen was asked to carry more weight on Sunday. Grant Anderson, Brock Burke, and Jose Leclerc combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Will Smith, however, struggled in the eighth as the Brewers added three runs and forced Chris Stratton to come in to record the final out of the inning.
