Texas Rangers To Move 'A Lot' From Farm System in Trades

The Texas Rangers have less than a week to improve their roster via trade before the Aug. 1 deadline.

How much could the Texas Rangers move to get talent at the trade deadline?

Per one MLB executive, in a report at MLB.com, the Rangers could be moving quite a bit of young talent to get what they need for a playoff push.

“I could see them moving a lot from the system,” the executive said.

The Texas Rangers fired the first shot of the trade cycle last month with the deal to bring Aroldis Chapman to Arlington. So far, that deal has worked for the Rangers.

But Texas could use more bullpen help, perhaps even an additional bat that could be more of a full-time designated hitter.

Another executive said that the Rangers would probably pursue a starter at the deadline, too.

“They also want a starter; they’re worried about [Martín] Pérez and [Jon] Gray.”

Pérez is not having the season he had a year ago, when he went 12-8 with a 2.89 ERA and made the All-Star team for the first time.

He has a solid record at 8-3, but his ERA is two points higher than a year ago — 4.91. He’s also given up 18 home runs, seven more than he gave up last season.

In Gray’s case, it’s recent returns that appear to have the Rangers concerned. He has a 6-5 record with a 3.66 ERA. But in his last seven starts his ERA has jumped to 6.49. In his first 12 starts that ERA was 2.32.
