ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas Rangers made it through the trade deadline with a renewed sense of optimism after a roster-enhancing flurry of moves.

And they won a game Tuesday night.

The Rangers opened a six-game homestand by beating the lowly Chicago White Sox 2-0 at Globe Life Field. Texas (61-46) snapped a three-game losing streak and maintained slim half-game lead over the Houston Astros (61-47) in the American League West.

The Rangers emerged from a weekend of activity with new starters Max Scherzer and Jordan Montgomery, plus reliever Chris Stratton. Texas also added Aroldis Chapman to the bullpen in late June.

“I think we’ve added two frontline starting pitchers to a very good starting pitching staff,” general manager Chris Young said. “And two very good bullpen arms.”

Heaney Goes Deep

Texas starter Andrew Heaney had his longest outing since late May, going six-plus strong innings and striking out 11. The lefty didn’t allow a run, just two hits and didn’t walk a batter.

Heaney’s longest previous start was a seven-inning stint on May 27 against the Baltimore Orioles. He hasn’t allowed a run in three of his last six outings, and improved to 8-6 and lowered his ERA to 4-36.

It also marked only the fourth time in Heaney’s career that he’s struck out at least 11, with the last instance on April 17, 2022 while with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Garver, García Go Deep

Mitch Garver gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the fifth with a solo shot to left off White Sox starter Jesse Scholtens. The 411-foot blast into Chicago’s bullpen was Garver’s sixth home run of the season.

Garver has been thrust into the starting catcher role with the injury to Jonah Heim. It’s not foreign move for the veteran, who came to Texas last season with the expectation of being the starter before being derailed by injury.

Adolis García went yard in the seventh off Chicago reliever Declan Cronin. His 26th homer traveled 418 feet to left-center for a 2-0 lead.

Up Next

The Rangers go for the series win Wednesday at 7:05 p.m with Dane Dunning (8-4, 3.23) on the hill, while Chicago is going with Dylan Cease (4-4, 4.15).

The Rangers have lost their last three series.
