Texas Rangers starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is “trending in the right direction” for a return to the rotation, according to general manager Chris Young, who spoke to 105.3 The Fan earlier this week.

Young felt the team got ahead of some arm discomfort Eovaldi was experiencing after the All-Star break, when the Rangers decided to skip a start and then put the right-hander on the injured list.

“We wanted to give him some rest,” Young said. “We’re slowing building him back up. We have a high level of confidence that he can come back and be in midseason form. But we won’t get there if we don’t do it one step at a time.”

Young didn’t have a timetable for Eovaldi, saying the club wants to get him back “as fast as we can, but as slow as we need to.”

Eovaldi continues to work his way back from the forearm strain that put him on the injured list on July 30. He played catch last week while the team was at Globe Life Field, and at the time Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said that he’ll need a little bit of time to build back up, perhaps two to three weeks.

Eovaldi also threw a pain-free bullpen.

He didn’t rule out ramping Eovaldi up without a rehab assignment, as the team did with Jacob deGrom earlier this season.

Eovaldi has made just one start since the All-Star break, throwing six shutout innings on July 18 in a win over Tampa Bay at Globe Life Field. Eovaldi is 11-3 with a 2.69 ERA for the season.
