Super Bowl Injury Update From Rangers Alum Pat Mahomes
Former Texas Rangers pitcher Pat Mahomes has a Patrick Mahomes injury update.
The elder Mahomes, a former Major League pitcher who did some time with the Rangers, talked with YES and the New York Post on a Wednesday podcast about various baseball items. But first on the list was an injury update on his son, Patrick, who will lead the Kansas City Chiefs into the Super Bowl on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Well I think he’s improving every day,” Mahomes said. “Based on all the reports I’m getting from him, which he’s not gonna tell me the whole, full truth. But he said he’s getting better every day. Just general soreness and he feels like he’s going to be ready to go.”
The younger Mahomes suffered the injury, considered a high ankle sprain, in his first playoff game. He played both football and baseball at Texas Tech University before settling on playing football full-time and earning a first-round selection from the Kansas City Chiefs. While at Whitehouse High School, outside of Tyler, Texas, Mahomes was a multi-sport athlete.
The elder Mahomes played his high school sports in Lindale, Texas, which is near Tyler and Whitehouse. Like his son, he was a multi-sport athlete. He signed with the Minnesota Twins out of high school and eventually reached the Majors, where he pitched for more than a decade.
With the Rangers in 2001, Mahomes worked as a reliever who made 56 appearances and went 7-6 with a 5.70 ERA.
