The Texas Rangers will promote outfielder J.P. Martinez from Triple-A Round Rock to the Majors before their three-game series with the San Francisco Giants, per The Dallas Morning News.
The Rangers have not made a formal announcement of a transaction. With the Rangers off Thursday, they likely won’t make any move official until Friday. As Martinez is not on the 40-man roster, the Rangers will have to make a move to activate him.
It’s a moment that has been a long time in the making for Martinez, who joined the organization in 2018 as an international free agent out of Cuba who netted a $2.8 million signing bonus.
He’s put together his best season offensively in 2023, primarily for Round Rock. He’s played five combined games at Double-A Frisco and High Class-A Hickory on injury rehab assignments.
While Martinez, 27, is not a Top 30 prospect, he’s one of the few everyday players in the organization that is batting better than .300 for the season. He’s slashed .311/.435/.558/.993 in 72 total minor-league games in 2023, including 12 home runs and 56 RBI. His power numbers are some of the best of his career, too.
He’s hit 15 home runs on two separate occasions and set a career-high of 63 RBI in 2019.
He’s played all three outfield positions in his career, with the majority coming in center field (221 games) and left field (108). This season he’s played 37 games in center, 16 in left and 13 in right.
