A busy Saturday for the Texas Rangers ended with thud, as the San Diego Padres claimed a mundane 4-0 shutout win at Petco Park.

The Rangers (60-45) saw their lead in the American League West shrink to one game over the Houston Astros (59-46). Texas has dropped two in a row and six of eight overall.

The Rangers have also lost their last three series after getting back-to-back three-game sweeps coming out of the All-Star break. In the previous two series to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Astros, Texas lost the first two games before winning the series finale.

The Rangers have been blanked seven times this season.

The lead up to the second game in the Padres series was quite eventful. The Rangers secured a blockbuster trade for three-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer from the New York Mets. Bruce Bochy also announced the ace Nathan Eovaldi is dealing with elbow soreness and would miss his second straight start Sunday.

Another Uneven Pérez Outing

Rangers starter Martín Pérez struggled again, giving up four runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. The lefty has allowed at least three earned runs in all four starts in July, with his ERA climbing to a season-high 4.98.

San Diego scored four runs in the second inning, as the first five Padres up reached base. Pérez allowed four singles and walked two in the frame.

He dropped to 8-4.

Bats Continue to Slumber

Much like Friday’s listless performance, where the Rangers avoided a shutout with a lone run in the ninth, the offense failed to wake up against former Texas starter Yu Darvish.

Sure, the Rangers are without All-Stars Corey Seager and Jonah Heim – both on the injured list – but there are plenty of potent bats still in the lineup. They’re just not producing.

Texas managed just four hits. All-Stars Marcus Semien, Adolis García and Josh Jung combined to go 1-for-11. Nathaniel Lowe, Travis Jankowski and Leody Taveras totaled just one hit together.

Up Next

The Rangers have not announced a starter for Sunday with Eovaldi being skipped. The Padres are sending left-hander Blake Snell (6-8, 2.67) to hill, looking for the sweep.
