Rangers Beat Giants for Second Straight Spring Win
The Texas Rangers beat the San Francisco Giants, 11-7, on Friday in Surprise. Here’s a breakdown of the game.
Rangers 11, Giants 7
How the Rangers Won: A five-run fifth inning — with no home runs — helped the Rangers build a 8-1 lead and, despite a pair of three-run innings for the Giants down the stretch, Texas held on.
Records: San Francisco, 2-5; Texas, 5-4.
Winning pitcher: Josh Sborz (TEX, 1-0).
Losing pitcher: Sean Manaea (SF, 0-1).
Rangers at the plate: The Rangers had 12 hits, but no one had multiple hits. The offense was scattered throughout the lineup, and the Rangers were aided by seven walks. Clint Frazier and Jonathan Ornelas each had a double. Sandy Leon had the only home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth. Robbie Grossman drove in two runs on his hit.
Rangers on the mound: Taylor Hearn drew the start and gave up two hits and a run in his only inning of work. Sborz worked one scoreless inning and ended up with the win because the Rangers took the lead in the bottom of the second. Ian Kennedy, Kyle Cody and Daniel Robert each threw a scoreless inning.
Then the fireworks came. Zack Littell had his second bad outing, giving up three Giants runs in the sixth inning. After Marc Church threw a scoreless inning, Grant Anderson gave up three more runs on just two hits. Michael Brewer threw a scoreless ninth to preserve the win.
Jon Gray was a late scratch due to back stiffness. He was scheduled to make his second spring training start.
