Texas Rangers Set Two Starters, Have Opening for White Sox Series
Texas Rangers left-hander Andrew Heaney will start the first game of the homestand on Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox.
The Rangers announced two of their pitching probables for the series via release. The Rangers also announced that their three new acquisitions — pitchers Max Scherzer, Jordan Montgomery and Chris Stratton — would be introduced to the media before Tuesday’s game.
Heaney (7-6, 4.62) will make his start on five days’ rest. He won his last outing against the Houston Astros on Wednesday.
Heaney will be opposite Jesse Scholtens (1-3, 3.32), who made his MLB debut in April and is making just his third start. The White Sox have traded away several pitchers with the deadline approaching on Tuesday.
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy previously announced that Scherzer was “penciled in” to start Thursday’s series Chicago finale. Scherzer (9-4, 4.01) last started Friday for the New York Mets.
He is expected to face Touki Toussaint (1-3, 3.50), who will make his sixth start of the season.
The Rangers have not announced a probable for Wednesday’s game with the White Sox. Chicago is expected to start Dylan Cease (4-4, 4.15), assuming Cease isn’t traded before the deadline.
The Rangers have a chance to reset its rotation after a 1-5 road trip and placing pitcher Nathan Eovaldi on the 15-day injured list.
Based on rest, the Rangers could start Jon Gray, Dane Dunning or Montgomery on Wednesday.
With seven starting pitchers, the Rangers have not announced who will move into the bullpen. The Rangers must also make room for Scherzer, Montgomery and Stratton on the 40-man roster on Tuesday.
