The Texas Rangers have reportedly agreed to trade for New York Mets pitcher Max Scherzer, as long as the ace agrees to waive his no-trade clause.

The New York Post reported the agreement.

The report did not indicate what the Rangers were giving up in return for Scherzer. But, Scherzer asked for a meeting with team ownership after the Mets traded reliever David Robertson to the Miami Marlins on Friday night.

Scherzer wanted to know what direction the team was going in at both the trade deadline and in the future, according to the reports.

Scherzer signed a three-year, $130 million deal before the 2022 season. Last year the Mets rode Scherzer to a postseason berth.

The Mets are under .500 and trying to determine just how many of their assets to sell off at the trade deadline.

Scherzer, 38, is a three-time Cy Young winner and an eight-time All-Star. He's 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA this season. He won a World Series with the Washington Nationals in 2019.

The Rangers have been looking to add starting pitching and relief pitching before the trade deadline. Last month the Rangers dealt two players for reliever Aroldis Chapman, who has thrown well in relief.

Scherzer would join a Rangers rotation that includes Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Martín Pérez, Andrew Heaney, and Dane Dunning. The Rangers’ biggest offseason acquisition, Jacob deGrom, was Scherzer’s teammate in New York last season but is on the injured list for the rest of this season due to Tommy John surgery.
