Texas Rangers Blast Way Past Blue Jays To Win Series
The Texas Rangers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays 10-0 on Wednesday night at the Rogers Centre.
The Rangers (81-64) got bad news on starting pitcher Max Scherzer earlier in the day, as he was diagnosed with a strained teres major and was declared out for the rest of the season.
It didn't impact the Rangers, at least on Wednesday. The offense produced, with Nathaniel Lowe delivering the biggest blow of the game. Jordan Montgomery (9-11) dealt an impressive start for Texas. And, the Rangers won their fifth straight game and took the series from the Blue Jays (80-66).
Yusei Kikuchi (9-6) took the loss.
The Rangers remained in both the American League West Division race and in the Wild Card race as they enter the final game of the series with Toronto on Thursday.
Rangers 10, Blue Jays 0
Here are the highlights from the Rangers' game with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.
Montgomery Makes it Happen
The same day the Rangers announced that Max Scherzer would miss the rest of the regular season, Jordan Montgomery threw a gem. The left-hander threw seven shutout innings, giving up just four hits. He struck out three and walked one.
Martín Pérez took over in the eight and threw a shutout inning.
Ian Kennedy threw a scoreless ninth to finish off the game.
The Offense Blows Up ... Again
Texas hit double-digits for the second time in the series and for the 25th time this season, on the strength of three home runs and two RBI singles.
The Rangers put up four runs in the fourth inning, with first baseman Nathaniel Lowe doing the heavy lifting. Catcher Jonah Heim singled home Corey Seager to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. But the Rangers still have two runners on base and Lowe connected for his 16th home run to dead center field to push the lead to 4-0.
Texas made it 6-0 thanks to Grossman’s two-run home run to left field in the fifth inning. After that, rookie Evan Carter’s RBI single scored Lowe in the sixth to make it 7-0.
In the ninth, Mitch Garver’s three-run home run put the Rangers in double-digits.
Grossman, Lowe, Garver and Carter each had two hits for the Rangers.
