Watch: Nathaniel Lowe's Heartfelt Message to Cancer-Stricken Mother After Texas Rangers Clinch World Series Berth
Texas Rangers first baseman Nathaniel Lowe had a message for his mother Wendy after winning Game 7 of the American League Championship Series over the Houston Astros.
Lowe and his brother, Josh, revealed during the AL Wild Card Series in Tampa that their mother, Wendy, was fighting brain cancer and wouldn’t be able to make their matchup. Josh plays for the Tampa Bay Rays.
Wendy and the family joined the two of them at both of their regular-season series. But, due to Wendy’s treatment, she was unable to make the playoff trip.
She was not in attendance for Monday’s Game 7 as Lowe joined the Fox set postgame with Kevin Burkhardt, Alex Rodriguez, David Ortiz and Derek Jeter.
After talking about the series, Burkhardt asked Lowe if he was going to FaceTime with his mother after they were done. But he offered Lowe a moment to send a message to his mom on set.
“I mean I surely wouldn’t be here without you,” he said. “I love you to the moon and back. Josh and I are so fortunate to have a mom like you to get us in this position. So, we’re going to keep going and I know you want us to win this whole thing so we’re going to give it our best shot whoever is up next.”
Josh was the one that first talked about their mother’s cancer during the lead-up to the AL Wild Card series.
"She's actually battling cancer, so she's going through chemo right now,” he said. “She won't be able to make it, but I asked her if it was OK if I said something, and she said yes because the more people that know, the more prayers that could be had for her.”
At their first meeting at Tropicana Field in June, Wendy wore a custom baseball jersey that was split between a white Rays jersey and a blue Rangers jersey with “Lowe” across the back.
The Rangers will advance to their third World Series. Game 1 will be Friday night at Globe Life Field against either the Philadelphia Phillies or Arizona Diamondbacks.
