The Boston Red Sox could land arguably the most intriguing free agent in Major League Baseball history this upcoming offseason.

Boston is expected to be very active this offseason as the club looks to get back to the postseason in 2024. The Red Sox recently fired former Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom and is in the market for a new person to lead the franchise at the moment. Once the decision has been made, the Red Sox will turn their focus to adding to the roster.

The Red Sox have a few holes on the roster to plug up this offseason. The starting rotation is the biggest point of concern, but Boston also could use another power bat. One player who could fit both needs and will be available and reportedly has an interest in joining the Red Sox is Los Angeles Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani, according to longtime MLB insider Peter Gammons.

"(National League) executive long familiar with Shohei Ohtani believes he is interested in Boston, partly because of his relationship with New Balance CEO Jim Davis," Gammons said. "Bosox problem: Masataka Yoshida has to DH, Ohtani off (Tommy John) must DH, Sox (money) mostly going to pitching."

Boston recently was floated as one of the favorites to land Ohtani this winter and this is just another example of the possibility. Gammons mentioned that one obstacle could be the designated hitter position. Ohtani needs to DH and Gammons tied Yoshida to the position. If Boston can land Ohtani, they could just keep Yoshida in left field and have both bats in the lineup.

Ohtani likely won't miss next season, or at least for the majority of the campaign, but his bat alone would be a massive help. The Red Sox have plenty of money to spend and it could make sense to throw it all at the two-way star.
