Blue Jays Reportedly Showing Interest In Rumored Red Sox Target In Surprise News
The Toronto Blue Jays seemingly have a surplus of middle infielders.
If the 2024 campaign were to begin today, the Blue Jays would have two-time All-Star Bo Bichette at shortstop and either one-time All-Star Santiago Espinal or Cavan Biggio manning second base.
Toronto will have to figure out who will be playing third base if the club loses All-Star Matt Chapman in free agency. If the Blue Jays don't re-sign Chapman, that could change the infield alignment a tad.
It sounds like Toronto is attempting to have contingency plans in place and even reportedly has shown interest in acquiring rumored Boston Red Sox target Jonathan India from the Cincinnati Reds, according to veteran insider Bob Elliott.
"Blue Jays have shown interest in dealing for Reds (second baseman) Jonathan India," Elliott said.
Boston has been in the news lately as the club has been linked to the 2021 National League Rookie of the Year Award winner on multiple occasions. The Reds -- like the Blue Jays -- have a surplus of infield talent and possibly could deal India away this offseason.
Cincinnati has come out and said it wasn't planning on trading India, but rumors have still swirled and talks still have been mentioned as ongoing. India Is just 27 years old and has plenty of upside. It's not surprising that some clubs have shown interest.
If the Blue Jays were to land India, that would hurt the Red Sox because it would take a possible middle infield upgrade option off the market. It's too early to tell if a move is a possibility but it shouldn't be ruled out.
