Diamondbacks Reportedly 'Would Love' To Sign Ex-Red Sox Slugger This Offseason
One former member of the Boston Red Sox could be on the move.
Former Red Sox slugger Justin Turner currently is a free agent after opting out of his contract with Boston and certainly will have a solid market. Turner is 39 years old but was extremely solid in 2023 and likely will land a multi-year deal this offseason. One team that reportedly is interested in landing Turner is the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"The Diamondbacks still would love to sign (designated hitter/infielder) Justin Turner to replace the leadership and bat of Evan Longoria," Nightengale said.
Turner signed with the Red Sox as a free agent last year and quickly became a fan-favorite in the organization. He was one of Boston's best offensive players in 2023 and finished the season with 23 home runs, a career-high 96 RBIs, and a solid .276/.345/.455 slash line in 146 games played. Plus, he saw time at first base, second base, and third base, along with designated hitter.
Arizona has been mentioned as a possible fit for Turner on multiple occasions at this point in the offseason. The Diamondbacks need help at third base and Turner could fill the role. Arizona sees itself as just one or two pieces away from making another run for a World Series title and likely would take a chance on Turner on a short-term deal.
Turner was beloved in Boston and there have been rumblings of a possible reunion but at this point it is unlikely. Wherever he does end up playing in 2024, hopefully, he will be able to maintain the success he found in Boston.
