Ex-All-Star Hosted Throwing Session For Clubs; Red Sox Are Logical Landing Spot
The Boston Red Sox need to add to the starting rotation but it doesn't seem like the club is willing to pay the price needed to land a frontline hurler.
While this is the case, Boston still could end up adding to the rotation. There are some solid mid-tier options out there that could fit within the Red Sox's budget.
Boston needs to add at least one or two starters before Spring Training rolls around. Some of the top mid-tier options still available are Hyun-Jin Ryu, Michael Clevinger, Michael Lorenzen, and Noah Syndergaard.
Syndergaard had a tough 2023 season but could be an interesting candidate to consider for Boston. The one-time All-Star reportedly threw a bullpen session for interested clubs and impressed, according to FanSided's Robert Murray.
"Free-agent pitchers Michael Lorenzen and Noah Syndergaard threw bullpen sessions for about 16 (Major League Baseball) teams in California on Tuesday, sources say," Murray said. "Both players impressed in the throwing sessions, with Syndergaard consistently sitting at 93-95 mph...
"Syndergaard, 31, is coming off a season in which he posted a 6.50 ERA in 88.2 innings with the (Los Angeles Dodgers) and (Cleveland Guardians). He’s a candidate to receive a one-year, prove-it deal and is drawing interest from the Pittsburgh Pirates, among others, sources say."
The hard-throwing righty struggled last season but is a bounce-back candidate who could be had for a cheap contract. He had a 6.50 ERA last season in 18 total appearances with the Dodgers and Guardians. Syndergaard had a 3.94 ERA in 2022 with the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies with a 95-to-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Boston still needs to add to the rotation and if Syndergaard is fully healthy and could return to form, he could be an interesting option.
