Ex-Red Sox Catcher Looking To Revive Career After Officially Signing With NL East Club
One former member of the Boston Red Sox has a new home.
Former Boston catcher Kevin Plawecki officially agreed to a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on Monday, according to the Washington Post's Andrew Golden.
"The Nationals signed veteran catcher Kevin Plawecki to a minor league deal, per source," Golden said. "Plawecki, 32, has played with four teams over his eight-year career. Split time between the Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox a year ago. Career .235 hitter.
Plawecki began his MLB career with the New York Mets in 2015 after being drafted by the club in the first round of the 2012 MLB June Amateur Draft. The 32-year-old spent the first four years of his career in New York before joining the Cleveland Indians ahead of the 2019 campaign.
Boston signed Plawecki as a free agent ahead of the 2020 season and he remained with the club until he was designated for assignment in 2022. In just over two full seasons in Boston, Plawecki slashed .270/.333/.364 to go across five home runs and 44 RBIs across 148 games played serving as a backup to former Red Sox catcher Christian Vázquez.
Plawecki will begin his career in the Washington organization with the Triple-A Rochester Red Wings but he could have an impact on the big league club at some point in 2023. The 32-year-old has shown throughout his career that he can be a solid depth piece for a club. Washington currently has Keibert Ruiz and Riley Adams on the club's active roster. If either were to a suffer an injury at some point, Plawecki provides the club needed depth.
He may not be a game-changer for Washington, but he could help the club in 2023.
