Ex-Red Sox Fireballer Shining With AL East Rival After Tumultuous Start To Season
One familiar face is shining in an extended role with an American League East rival.
Former Boston Red Sox fireballer Jake Diekman struggled to open the season for the Chicago White Sox and eventually was designated for assignment after pitching to an abysmal 7.94 ERA in 13 appearances. After being released, Diekman latched on with the rival Tampa Bay Rays and has completely turned back the clock.
Diekman has made 18 appearances so far this season with the Rays and has completely turned things around while compiling a 2.40 ERA. To make matters even better for the 36-year-old, he has put together 13 straight scoreless appearances -- including one against Boston -- for the Rays after logging an inning of work in the club's loss to the Kansas City Royals on Saturday.
Boston took a chance on Diekman in 2022 and he wound up being one of the club's most consistent relievers before being traded to the White Sox ahead of the trade deadline for catcher Reese McGuire. Diekman made 44 appearances with the Red Sox last season and compiled a 5-1 record and a 4.23 ERA. The fireballer struck out 51 batters across 38 1/3 innings of work before being traded to the White Sox.
The fact that Diekman has been able to regain his form in Tampa Bay shouldn't be too surprising. The Rays have been known in recent years for their strong pitching. Everything seemingly has gone right for the Rays so far this season as the club has a league-best 53-27 record so Diekman returning to form is just another example of the rich getting richer. Hopefully, he can continue his hot streak and maintain his current momentum.
