Ex-Red Sox Flamethrower DFA'd While Player Chaim Bloom Traded For Shines
The Chicago White Sox are in the midst of one of their worst starts to a season in franchise history, which led to a series of 11 roster moves Tuesday afternoon. Multiple transactions have Boston Red Sox ties and implications.
Many are talking about how Jake Diekman's release signaled that Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom got the better of the White Sox's front office at the deadline but a lower-level move makes Bloom look great as well.
The White Sox designated right-handed reliever Frank German for assignment Tuesday afternoon, according to the Major League Baseball transaction wire.
The 25-year-old posted a 7.15 ERA with a whopping .388 batting average against in 11 1/3 innings for the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate. He never made an appearance for the big league club.
German was traded from the Red Sox to the White Sox for fellow right-handed reliever Theo Denlinger back in February, who has been nothing short of impressive ever since.
The 26-year-old has an 0.87 ERA with a 13-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a shocking .162 batting average against through eight games with Double-A Portland.
With the up-and-coming Denlinger having a spectacular season for the Sea Dogs thus far, the question of who “won” the trade seems blatantly obvious following the release of German. Even if Denlinger comes back down to reality, he's outlasted German.
Of course, the release of Diekman made larger headlines, but the trade made back in February shows is just another successful trade in Bloom's short history with the Red Sox.
