Ex-Red Sox Slugger Officially Released From NL Central Club After Tumultuous Stint
One former member of the Boston Red Sox officially is looking for a new home.
Former Red Sox slugger Hunter Renfroe joined the Cincinnati Reds earlier this season after spending the bulk of the campaign with the Los Angeles Angels but officially was released by the club Thursday.
Renfroe appeared in just 14 games with the Reds and struggled slashing .128/.227/.205 with one home run and four RBIs. The 31-year-old was acquired by Cincinnati after being placed on waivers by the Angels as they did a complete reshuffling of their squad due to team struggles. Renfroe was much more productive with Los Angeles and clubbed 19 home runs and drove in 56 runs to go along with a .242/.304/.434 slash line.
The 31-year-old certainly has been a journeyman throughout his career. Renfroe began his big league career with the San Diego Padres in 2016 and spent the first four seasons of his career with the club. Since 2019, Renfroe has spent time with the Tampa Bay Rays, Red Sox, Milwaukee Brewers, Angels, and, most recently, the Reds.
With not much time left this season, it wouldn't be too surprising to see Renfroe not sign with another club until this upcoming offseason. The 31-year-old certainly will get an opportunity with another club ahead of the 2024 campaign, but there is only a little over a week left in the 2023 regular season. Renfroe will be an intriguing free agent this upcoming offseason and likely will add another team to his list of teams he's played for in the not-so-distant future.
