Ex-Red Sox Utility Man Reportedly Cut By NL West Club; Would Reunion Make Sense?
One former member of the Boston Red Sox will soon be a free agent.
Former Boston utility man Yairo Munoz reportedly was released by the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday afternoon, according to the MiLB transaction wire.
Munoz signed with the Diamondbacks ahead of the 2023 campaign to a minor league contract and impressed with the Triple-A Reno Aces, but was only able to make 12 appearances after beginning the season on the injured list. In the small sample size, Munoz slashed .304/.389/.391 to go along with four doubles and five RBIs while seeing time at first base, third base, and designated hitter.
The 28-year-old made his professional debut in 2012 after being signed as an international free agent by the Oakland Athletics and has bounced around throughout his career. Munoz made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 and has played parts of five seasons in the big leagues also seeing time with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.
In his big league career, Munoz has appeared in 242 games across five seasons and has slashed .268/.319/.396 to go along with 14 home runs and 66 RBIs. To go along with his solid offensive play, he also has seen time at every position except pitcher and catcher throughout his professional career.
Boston is thin in the infield at this time so maybe it would make sense to bring a familiar option like Munoz back into the fold on a minor-league contract to add even more depth. With Trevor Story and Yu Chang injured, Enrique Hernandez has seen time at shortstop and currently is leading the league in errors. Boston also has Christian Arroyo and Pablo Reyes on the active roster at this time.
The Red Sox could use more depth in the minor leagues thanks in large part to the injuries that have ravaged the club so far this season. Munoz has always had a solid bat and is flexible. Maybe it wouldn't be the worst idea to bring him back into the organization as veteran depth with the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox.
