Former Red Sox Pitcher In 'Advanced Discussions' To Become Boston's New GM
The Boston Red Sox continue searching for a replacement for former chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom.
While the search has been prolonged thus far, including multiple declined interviews, Boston might be locked in on their next leader of baseball operations.
Former Red Sox pitcher (and current executive with the Chicago Cubs) Craig Breslow is in 'advanced discussions' to take the top baseball ops job in Boston according to The Athletic's Patrick Mooney.
Breslow was promoted to assistant general manager with the Cubs following the departure of former Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein. Breslow also recently took on the role of senior vice president of pitching with Chicago and the team has seen significant improvements in their pitching staff since that change was made.
He currently lives with his wife and kids in the Boston area so the transition would seemingly be an easy one for the 2013 World Series champion.
Now before we get too ahead of ourselves and assume Breslow will take over the general manager responsibilities, we need to remind ourselves of the offseason lingo that constantly gets thrown around this time of year. I've seen far too many 'advanced discussions' that fizzle out very soon after.
While Breslow seems to check a lot of boxes for the Red Sox, he would also be entering a role he has never filled before. Some of the highly regarded individuals turning down interviews with Boston are current general managers and know how difficult and multi-layered that job can be.
Any talks I've had with Bloom over the last few years have made it very clear that this is a job that's not built for everyone. The fact that so many people have turned down even interviewing for this job can't be too surprising considering the current setup of the Red Sox front office. Crowded and opinionated.
Could Craig Breslow actually be the next head of baseball ops with the Red Sox? We'll have to wait to find out.
