Former Red Sox Skipper Reportedly Could Take Over AL West Club This Offseason
One former member of the Boston Red Sox could have a new job shortly.
The Los Angeles Angels are looking for a new manager after letting former skipper Phil Nevin go after a disastrous stretch with the club. Los Angeles entered the 2023 campaign essentially needing to compete for a World Series in order to reportedly keep superstar Shohei Ohtani and instead finished in fourth place in the American League West with a disappointing 73-89 record.
It's unclear exactly who will take over this offseason as the club's next manager but a few names have been floated. One of the biggest names available is former New York Mets manager Buck Showalter who reportedly will interview with the club. One familiar name who reportedly will have a shot at the Angels' manager spot is former Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke, according to USA Today Sports' Bob Nightengale.
"Former Red Sox and (Milwaukee Brewers) manager Ron Roenicke, a long-time Angels coach under Mike Scioscia, along with Angels coach Benji Gil and former Mets manager Buck Showalter may also get formal interviews," Nightengale said.
Roenicke was named as Boston's interim manager for the 2020 campaign with Alex Cora away from baseball. The interim tag was removed but the Red Sox finished in last place in the American League East and he was fired at the end of the season making way for Cora to regain the position.
Even if Ohtani leaves this offseason, the Angels still have plenty of talent and are in an intriguing spot. We'll find out more in the not-so-distant future.
