Free Agent Ex-All-Star Seen As Possible Backup Option For Red Sox
The Boston Red Sox's starting rotation isn't set despite Spring Training already starting up.
Boston already is in the middle of Spring Training action but it wouldn't be surprising at all to see at least one more signing to boost the rotation. Former New York Yankees, St. Louis Cardinals, and Texas Rangers pitcher Jordan Montgomery has been the most talked about option for Boston.
While Montgomery would be the best option, if the Red Sox fail to sign him, there still are some other options out there that could help.
One player who could be a possible backup option is one-time All-Star Michael Lorenzen, according to MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams.
"Not to be outdone in their need for rotation help amid a shaky collection of starters, Boston has been in a staring contest with Montgomery all winter," Adams said. "If he signs elsewhere or they deem the price too high, Lorenzen could easily fit into the budget of a team that’s nearly $60MM from its franchise record and not close to the luxury tax.
"Lucas Giolito and Brayan Bello are set, but the combination of Nick Pivetta (who lost his rotation spot for a time in ’23), Tanner Houck, Kutter Crawford, and Garrett Whitlock lacks reliability. The Sox need quality innings, but ownership clearly put its foot in its mouth earlier this offseason with a 'full-throttle' proclamation that has been followed up with payroll reduction and modest additions on the margins of the roster."
Lorenzen would be a solid option for Boston at a low cost. He was an All-Star in 2023 and spent time with both the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. He had a 4.18 ERA in 29 total appearances with a 111-to-47 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
The veteran hurler was most impressive with the Tigers to begin the season and had a 3.58 ERA in his first 18 starts. It's unclear who Boston will sign, but it seems like another move is coming.
