The Boston Red Sox may not have started the 2023 campaign how they hoped, but that doesn't mean that there wasn't any good news.

Boston opened the 2023 season at home against the Baltimore Orioles and fell 10-9 thanks in large part to an eye-popping nine walks and a massive performance from catcher Adley Rutschman. Although it wasn't their best day, Boston's dynamic rookie duo of Masataka Yoshida and Triston Casas was impressive.

Yoshida was the Red Sox's major signing of the offseason. The 29-year-old shined for the Orix Buffaloes during his seven-year professional career, but some wondered whether or not Boston overspent. Since arriving in Boston, Yoshida only has shined. He impressed throughout spring in the World Baseball Classic en route to setting the tournament record for RBIs with 13 and has looked solid so far with the Red Sox.

The 29-year-old made his MLB debut Thursday against the Orioles and finished the day 2-for-4 from the plate to go along with an RBI, run scored, and hit by pitch.

Casas also impressed for Boston in its Opening Day loss. Although he finished the day 0-for-2 from the plate, the young first baseman chipped in two RBIs and also earned a walk. The 23-year-old also was solid defensively over at first base in his 2023 debut.

Although Boston fell in their opener, there still was plenty for Red Sox Nation to be excited about despite the loss. Boston went down big early, but fought almost all of the way back. Yoshida and Casas both looked solid in their 2023 debuts and should play major roles with the team this season.

It may not have been the start the Red Sox wanted, but the good thing about baseball is there are 161 games left to get back on track.
