Mariners Rising Star Reportedly Trade Candidate For Red Sox To Bolster Rotation
The Boston Red Sox are in the market for at least one new starting pitcher this offseason.
Boston has been linked to numerous starters at this point. The Red Sox likely will look to land multiple hurlers this offseason. Boston has been linked to both free agents, as well as possible trade candidates.
The Red Sox have the money needed to land a free-agent star and the prospect capital needed to get any trade done. Frankly, the Red Sox could get any deal done if they really wanted to.
One starting pitcher who reportedly could be a trade candidate for the Red Sox this offseason is Seattle Mariners rising star Logan Gilbert, according to MassLive.com's Sean McAdam.
"On the free agent front, (Blake Snell) comes with draft pick compensation attached thanks to a qualifying offer, which would seem to eliminate him from consideration," McAdam said. "Beyond the lefty and Yamamoto, the rest of the free agent market doesn’t qualify as elite, though Jordan Montgomery might come close.
"After that, there’s the trade market. And the Red Sox have apparently decided, if they have to deal for pitching, they might as well trade for someone who they’re going to control for three or more seasons. Seattle’s Logan Gilbert is one such option."
Gilbert is the exact type of pitcher the Red Sox need. He is just 26 years old and has the makings to be one of the best young pitchers in baseball. Gilbert has logged an ERA under 4.00 in each of the last two seasons. In 2022, Gilbert compiled a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts and a 3.73 ERA in 2023 across 32 starts.
A deal for Gilbert certainly would cost a lot but would make sense. Seattle has a surplus of young pitching and needs help in the outfield. Boston possibly could start a deal with outfielder Alex Verdugo and then prospects from there to meet the Mariners' asking price -- if they even decide to deal Gilbert.
It's too early to know if a deal is possible, but landing Gilbert would be a massive pickup.
