The Miami Marlins seem to be looking for a new shortstop.

Miami won 84 games last season and could end up surprising some people in 2024. While this is the case, the club still needs to make a few more additions this offseason. Shortstop is an area of need after Joey Wendle signed with the New York Mets earlier this offseason.

One player who has been floated as an option for the Marlins is former Boston Red Sox speedster Adalberto Mondesí, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal.

"The Marlins are one of the teams talking to free-agent infielder Gio Urshela, according to sources briefed on the discussions," Rosenthal said. "Urshela would not address the team's need at shortstop but could not help fill a void created by the departures of (Jorge Soler) and Yuli Gurriel, moving between first base, third, and (designated hitter).

"When Josh Bell is the DH, Urshela could play first. When Jake Burger is the DH, Urshela could play third. How the Marlins address shortstop remains to be seen. Tim Anderson, Amed Rosario, Adalberto Mondesí, and Nick Ahmed are available free agents at the position."

Boston acquired Mondesí last offseason in a trade with the Kansas City Royals but he never was able to make an appearance with the Red Sox at the big league level due to injuries.

At one point he seemed like a rising star with the Royals but injuries have completely derailed his career. If he's healthy and can return to form, he'd be an intriguing pickup for the Marlins if they decided to hand him a deal.
