Mets Land Hard-Throwing Ex-Red Sox Pitcher After Rollercoaster Season
One former member of the Boston Red Sox has found a new home.
There are plenty of former Red Sox players still available in free agency right now and one hurler now is off the market. Former Boston fireballer Yacksel Ríos reportedly landed a minor league deal with the New York Mets, according to The Athletic's Will Sammon.
"Mets signed (right-handed pitcher) Yacksel Ríos to a minor league contract with an invite to Spring Training," Sammon said.
Ríos is looking to work his way back up to the big leagues after a down season in 2023. The righty made only three appearances at the big league level with the Oakland Athletics and allowed seven earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings pitched.
He was better in the minors, though. He made 22 appearances with the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers and logged a 2.49 ERA and a 30-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 25 1/3 innings pitched.
Throughout his career, he has spent time at the big league level with the Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, Seattle Mariners, Red Sox, and Athletics. It's unclear what role he will play with New York, but it could never hurt to add veterans with big-league upside on minor-league deals.
If Ríos can impress in Spring Training, maybe he could make the club before Opening Day. If not, he could either start the season in the minor leagues or be released with no big cost to the club.
Hopefully, he can get back on track with New York.
