MLB Insider Names Rumored Chaim Bloom Replacement If Red Sox's Season Goes Awry
The Boston Red Sox exceeded expectations to open the season but are starting to come back down to their level.
Boston sits at 28-25 after a disappointing West Coast road trip, fourth place in the historically excellent American League East and three games back of a Wild Card spot. Those placements are roughly where the consensus would have expected.
If the Red Sox maintained their current pace, Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom would likely be safe -- though there would be plenty of local media members calling for his head. The New York Post's Jon Heyman just added fuel to the fire.
"Former (Milwaukee) Brewers general manager David Stearns, who’s sitting the year out following the misguided Josh Hader trade, though generally he did excellent work, is a rumored potential candidate for a top Boston job if the Red Sox falter," Heyman wrote Thursday.
Heyman is not the only one going around looking for potential replacements for Bloom. The Athletic's Jim Bowden claimed New York Yankees executive Brian Sabean could be in the running for the job if Bloom is let go.
It's a little odd that there are reports of Bloom's potential replacements at all, especially in May. It would likely take a notable collapse for the Red Sox's ownership group to send Bloom packing. The current roster is good enough to win multiple divisions around Major League Baseball. If the AL East was not one of the best divisions of all time, Bloom would be receiving much more praise than criticism.
Even with the current adversity plaguing the team, I believe it's much more likely that they will take a step forward than back -- though a middling .500 club is the most likely result. Given the Red Sox's goal of resetting the luxury tax this season, that record would not be the worst thing.
Barring an awful second half, I would expect Bloom to make it through the offseason and use next season as an audition to prove whether he's right for the job or not -- with money to spend and some of his lauded prospects making it up the system.
